West Virginia State Parks
This is about a short visit to the NE part of mountainous West Virginia. An area near the border with Maryland and part of the Appalachian Mountains.
This region is steeped in coal mining history, with active mines still operating today. The landscape is defined by dramatic river valleys, cascading waterfalls, scenic lookouts, and miles of hiking trails that invite exploration.
Two state parks, Blackwater Falls and Canaan Valley, showcase the best outdoor activities the area has to offer. Whether you're seeking stunning vistas or peaceful nature walks, these parks are must-see destinations.

The coal mines in this region have been abandoned for many years, yet their impact continues to be felt. Pollution from these old mining operations still affects the ground and water in the area, leaving a lasting environmental footprint.
Because the coal extracted here was of low grade, it needed to be upgraded to coke before it could be used. This process involved converting the coal in fire pits constructed throughout the area. Cut logs from the surrounding forested mountains provided the necessary wood for these pits, which remain scattered across the landscape as evidence of the region's industrial past.

Many of the trails follow a stream, such as the one that runs alongside Big Run.
Canaan Valley State Park
The valley is expansive, nestled among forested mountain ranges. One of these ranges is home to a ski resort, providing recreational opportunities for visitors and locals alike. The valley itself is characterized by its extensive wetlands, which play a vital role in the area's ecosystem. Water originating from the surrounding mountains travels underground before emerging at various points throughout the valley, sustaining the wetlands and supporting diverse plant and animal life.
